Travel Bag: what you need to know

Unlike hard wheeled or hand luggage (formerly known as trunks), soft travel bags (also known as duffel bags by some brands) seem to be the right choice for carrying your belongings on a road trip, expedition or holiday. They are inspired by the cotton canvas sea bags, which were closed at the end with a rope and had a handle.

Modernised, this results in the travel bags found in all the major outdoor brands (The North Face, Patagonia, Osprey etc.). They are more easily transportable and versatile than suitcases and they also have the advantage of having been designed to cope with climatic and transport conditions that are not always convenient (humidity, dirt, falls etc.). They are available in many capacities (from 30L to 130L for The North Face or Osprey travel bags for example).

Travel bag in backpack

If you're going on a road trip and you expect to walk many miles or the country you're going to has very few roads that are suitable for rolling a suitcase. You need a travel backpack. Travel backpacks have a capacity of 40 to 90 litres, allowing you to take as much as possible with you. They are comfortable enough to carry on your back without the handles causing shoulder pain.

Rolling travel bag

Unlike suitcases, rolling travel bags are, for the most part, soft or semi-rigid, which allows you to transport them more easily in a car; bus; or plane. The wheels allow you to transport them more easily on station platforms or in airport terminals. Finally, some models of rolling travel bags also have a backpack handle. A must have for walking or carrying on a two-wheeled vehicle.

Waterproof bag

A waterproof bag is ideal for trips to wet countries, treks or even boating. It will protect your belongings from moisture and water, up to a certain limit.

Baby carrier bag

An essential accessory for trekking with your child. Baby carriers are very popular with young parents who travel. Your child will be comfortable and will enjoy an unobstructed view of the surrounding landscape!

Choosing a good travel bag

Even if it doesn't seem that important, the choice of a good travel bag is essential to the success of your expedition/trip/travel. Sturdy and waterproof are essential requirements, but the capacity will be up to you depending on the duration and the equipment you need.
