MTB Seatclamp, to firmly clamp your seatpost
A seatclamp is a small but very important part of your Mountain Bike. This metal collar, fitted on the seat tube is used to clamp and hold the seatpost. It prevent the
seatpost from dropping into the frame or your
saddle from rotating.
Which MTB Seatclamp do I need ?
Many riders adjust their saddle height before their first ride and then forget their seatclamp. However, if you you want to change your seatclamp for aesthetic reasons or because the one you have is damaged, be sure to choose the right clamp as different models are available on the market:
- Diameter: You need to measure the external diameter of your seat tube (not your seatpost). This diameter must correspond with the internal diameter of your new seat clamp. If it is too big, the seat post won't be held properly and if it is too small, it won't fit your frame.
The standard diameters available are: 28.6, 30.0, 31.8, 34.9 and 36.4mm.
- Closure: Quick-Release QR or Bolt closure. A Quick-Release clamp will have a lever to close and open it without tools. This system if useful if you want to lower your saddle on technical descents and raise your saddle for pedalling efficiency. With the new dropper seatpost available on the market, such as RockShox Reverb, QR clamp became less popular as there is no need anymore to adjust the seat post height.
Clamps with a Bolt closure use a simple bolt. They are often seen on DH bikes, Freeride and Enduro bikes. They are light and offer a good grip. You will need to carry an allen key to make any adjustment.
