Long gone are the days when mountain bike helmets were old-fashioned and uncool. Today, MTB helmets are light, comfortable, well ventilated and they look good. But above all, the MTB helmet makes a big difference. It ensures that your ride on the mountain bike is as safe as possible.
Mountain bike helmets are available in all kinds of designs, countless colours and a wide range of materials. From MTB enduro helmets to full-face MTB helmets: We show you which helmets are available, explain the differences and answer common questions. This is how we help you find the right mountain bike helmet for you.
A helmet makes a significant contribution to your safety. Especially when mountain biking, all kinds of dangers await you. Slippery stones, sharp branches or sudden steps can quickly bring you down. If you wear an MTB helmet, the chances are much better that you will not get hurt. A mountain bike helmet ensures that the fun of biking always comes first. Apart from that, there are no reasons not to wear a helmet these days: bike helmets are light, well ventilated and just look cool.
You have decided to buy a new MTB helmet? Perfect, you're on the safe side. Now you just have to choose the right helmet for you. However, it is not always easy to keep track of all the different helmet categories. The categories "women's MTB helmet" or "children's MTB helmet" are self-explanatory. But do you need a full-face helmet or rather a half-shell? Is a dirt helmet, an enduro helmet, an all-mountain helmet or a downhill helmet the right one for you? We shed light on the jungle of helmets:
Do you like dirt jumps or are you often on a pump track with your mountain bike? Then a dirt helmet is the right thing for you. Dirt helmets have a very unique design and an unmistakable look. Their rounded shape without many ventilation holes and without a helmet visor looks cool and modern. That's why many children and young people like this helmet category.
A dirt helmet is designed for the special requirements of jumplines. Its outer shell is particularly robust and hard-wearing. It is smooth and therefore glides particularly well over the mostly clay or asphalt tracks. Some dirt helmets are pulled down deep into the neck area to offer particularly good all-round protection. Despite their fresh look, dirt helmets also use the latest technologies. So you don't have to compromise on safety. Precisely fitting adjustment options and proven safety features such as the MIPS system are also available for dirt helmets.
Full-face helmets differ from a so-called half-shell by the additional chin bar. A full-face helmet offers even more safety and protection for the whole head. That's why a full-face helmet makes sense when you are exposed to particular risks. This can be the case when dirt jumping, visiting a bike park or at a downhill race. Full-face helmets are even compulsory for many enduro races.
For normal MTB use, a normal half-shell helmet is usually sufficient. These helmets are now so safe that you can go on tour without worrying. A half-shell is the best choice for you if you don't race anyway and don't hang around in bike parks.
If you are not sure, there is another option: there are full-face helmets with a removable chin bar. Such hybrids look like a full-fledged downhill helmet and are usually just as safe. However, they can be converted into a half-shell helmet in just a few steps. So you have two helmets in one: Downhill you click on the chin bar and enjoy maximum safety. Uphill, the chin bar disappears into the rucksack and you have a light, well-ventilated half-shell helmet on your head.
All-mountain helmets are made for typical all-round use. Do you like to ride long tours and are you more interested in enjoyment than in technical challenges? Then this helmet category is the right one for you. Allmountain MTB helmets offer the best mix of comfort, low weight and good ventilation. To ensure that the helmet fits well, all-mountain helmets also have proven adjustment systems. They ensure that the helmet does not slip and that you are always well protected. Some all-mountain helmets have an interchangeable visor: You can decide for yourself whether you want to wear the helmet with or without a visor. The Fox MTB helmet Speedframe is a typical helmet in this category.
Enduro helmets are the right choice for all those who like to take things to the next level. If no trail is too fast, too steep or too technical for you, this helmet category is the right choice. Enduro helmets offer particularly good protection. They are perfect for use in demanding terrain. They are often pulled down deep into the neck area to offer good all-round protection. In addition, some enduro helmets offer the following features:
- Adjustable size, interchangeable visors
- Special "goggle" mounts and an extra fit adapted to goggles
- Good ventilation
- Air slits designed for holding a normal pair of bike sunglasses
In many enduro competitions, full-face helmets are compulsory. Especially for this purpose, there are full-face enduro helmets whose chin bar can be removed. With such a helmet, you are in compliance with the rules for the race classification. For the transfer sections, you simply take off the chin bar. Then you can enjoy the lower weight and good ventilation. The Bell MTB helmet Super DH is a typical representative of this helmet type. However, almost all helmet manufacturers have a model with a removable chin strap in their range.
If your motto is "Higher, faster, further", a full-face or downhill helmet is the best MTB helmet for you. It offers optimal protection and is designed for particularly hard impacts. In many bike parks and especially at downhill races, full-face helmets are mandatory. For maximum protection, you can't do without a full-face helmet.
There is a wide range of MTB helmets for children. That's a good thing, because kids in particular should be well protected when they're out and riding. When the little ones are still learning to ride a bike, it's easy for them to crash.
MTB helmets for children often correspond technically to their counterparts for adults. However, their fit is designed to suit smaller heads. When it comes to design and special features, helmet manufacturers cater to the preferences of young shredders. When buying a children's helmet, make sure that the kids like it. Only then will they like to wear it. Of course, the correct fit is at least as important.
DIn order to understand how it develops its protective effect, you first need to know how a helmet is constructed. Modern MTB helmets are made using the so-called in-mold process. These helmets have a shock-absorbing interior that is usually made of EPS foam. A harder outer shell provides additional impact protection. Both layers are baked together under high pressure and heat in the in-mold process. Such helmets are state of the art and offer better impact protection at a lower weight than helmets of other designs. When you fall, the outer shell of the helmet distributes the impact pressure over a larger area. The actual shock absorption is then the task of the EPS interior.
For the helmet to offer optimal protection, it must fit perfectly. Modern helmets have appropriate adjustment systems for this. They can usually be operated with one hand by turning a wheel at the back of the head. The helmet then hugs your head and fits like a second skin. The chin straps, which are available with classic click fasteners or modern magnetic fasteners, provide additional protection.
There are proven technologies that measurably improve the safety of the MTB helmet. One of the best known goes by the name of MIPS. MIPS stands for "Multi-Directional Impact Protection". This means: MIPS protects you better in all falls that cause a rotational movement. This is the case with most involuntary landings. A lot of development work has gone into MIPS, but the way it works is still simple to understand. A plastic shell is attached to the inside of the helmet. And it is not fixed, but floating. This shell can therefore twist against the helmet. This is exactly what it does in the event of a fall. It noticeably reduces the rotational forces. MIPS is not manufacturer-specific. You can buy MIPS helmets from all kinds of helmet manufacturers. The POC Kortal Race MTB helmet is a classic representative of MIPS helmets.
There is a whole range of test certificates for mountain bike helmets. ASTM is the seal of the American Society for Testing and Materials. It is mainly found on helmets from the USA. The SNELL and ANSI standards also come from the USA, which is why not all helmets are certified according to them. For the European market, the CE mark and the EN1078 standard are decisive. Every helmet should bear these seals as well as the GS seal for tested safety.
The most important thing is that your helmet fits you. To ensure this, you need a measuring tape. Use it to measure the circumference of your head. Place the measuring tape at the height of the middle of your forehead and run it around your skull. You have already determined your personal head circumference and can order the right helmet size. Don't worry: Since all helmets can be adjusted within a certain range, it's not a matter of millimetres.
Everything else depends on your personal preferences:
Unfortunately, we have to answer yes to this question. This is true even if you cannot detect any obvious damage to the helmet. The reason for this is simple: as soon as the helmet has taken a blow, the material structure inside is irrevocably damaged. The inside of the helmet is specially designed to deform during a fall. This is the only way it can defuse the energy of the impact. If you fall again, your helmet will no longer have this ability. That is why you should always replace your helmet after a fall.
That's not the only reason why you should replace your helmet. Every helmet ages and with it its protective effect. After five years of use at the latest, you should treat yourself to new head protection - even without a fall.
1. First you have to make sure that the helmet is the right size. We have already explained how to do this above. Then you can continue with step 2.
2. Put the helmet on horizontally so that it encloses the back of the head but also the forehead.
3. Now adjust the helmet's adjustment system. Many helmets have a knob at the back of the head for this purpose. Turn it until the helmet is tight but still feels comfortable. If you lean forward and the helmet does not fall off, you have done everything right.
4. Now you have to adjust the fastening strap. The two straps coming off the helmet should converge below the earlobes at about the level of the cheekbone. If nothing pinches or bothers you, it is all good.
5. Finally, there is the chin strap. When you close it, it must be tight, but not constricting.
6. Now your new mountain bike helmet is perfectly adjusted to you and you're ready to go!
